How do I clean up my /usr/portage/distfiles directory

Fix/Answer

You could delete all files in the directory, but if you upgrade/downgrade or reinstall an app, all files have to be redownloaded. That is not good, because it wastes bandwidth of the mirror servers and you connection.

A better alternative is to use eclean from the gentoolkit package.

"eclean is small tool to remove obsolete portage sources files and binary packages. Used on a regular basis, it prevents your DISTDIR and PKGDIR directories to infinitely grow, while not deleting files which may still be useful."

Description:

The directory /usr/portage/distfiles is gentoo's storage for source files and all downloads.
After a few months this directory becomes really huge.
